Emeritus Status
and
Reactivation of CRN-BC™
Eligibility
To be eligible for CRN-BC™ certification emeritus status, the registered nurse (RN) must meet the following requirements:
CRN-BC™ Emeritus Status

The CRNCC has established an Emeritus Status for CRN-BC™ certified nurses who retire while their certification is active. Emeritus status is designed to provide special recognition of the accomplishment of CRN-BC™ certified nurses who are retired from the profession of clinical research nursing and who wish to retain an honorary certification. Emeritus status will provide retired clinical research nurses (CRNs) with a connectedness to the specialty practice and demonstrate the nurse’s dedication to professional certification for the duration of their retirement.

CRN-BC™ certified nurses must meet the following requirements to be eligible for Emeritus Status:
-
Retire with active CRN-BC™ certification.
-
Submit the Application for Emeritus Status Recognition prior to certification expiration.
-
Submit a one-time fee of $50.

Emeritus Status Designation

When granted, Emeritus status designation begins on the documented date of the Clinical Research Nurse Certification Council’s (CRNCC) approval of the request.
-
Once the Emeritus designation begins, any remaining balance of the previous 5-year certification period will be void.
-
CRNs granted Emeritus status, shall use the title "CRN-BC™ Emeritus" for the duration of their retirement.
-
If a nurse with CRN-BC™ Emeritus status returns to employment in clinical research (if the return to employment is not in a CRN role this item is not relevant) within 3 years of obtaining Emeritus status designation, you have the following 2 options:
-
If you intend to reactivate your CRN-BC™ credentials, notify CRNCC and begin Reactivation process as outlined below.
-
If you do not intend to reactivate your CRN-BC™ credential, notify CRNCC and immediately discontinue use of the Emeritus credential in all forms and settings.

Reactivation of CRN-BC™ Credential after Emeritus Status Designation

-
Nurses may request to reactivate their CRN-BC™ credential at any time within the initial 3 years of Emeritus status designation. The following is required to reactivate the designation of CRN-BC™:
-
Complete fifteen (15) contact hours of continuing education (CE) for each year of Emeritus Status designation preceding reactivation; at least 10 of those 15 required hours (per year) must be earned in clinical research. Use the CE Record to document the CE activities. Once CRN-BC™ is reactivated, the individual will fall under the current certification requirements for renewal processes, procedures, and timelines for all who are CRN-BC™ Certified. For example, if the certificant is granted reactivation of CRN-BC™ certification in calendar year 2028, the certification renewal will be due September 1, 2033.
-
-
Submit the Application for CRN-BC™ Reactivation and fee for certification renewal.
-
After three (3) years of Emeritus status, CRNs desirous of holding an active CRN-BC™ credential must reapply by fulfilling the initial certification qualifications and following the initial portfolio submission process described in the CRN Certification by Portfolio Candidate Handbook.
